We’re honoured to announce that Party Onbici has been nominated for The Earthshot Prize — Prince William’s prestigious global environmental award that seeks to find and scale the most innovative solutions to repair our planet.

What is The Earthshot Prize?

The Earthshot Prize was founded by HRH Prince William with an ambitious goal: to discover and support groundbreaking solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges.

Often described as the “Nobel Prize for the environment,” the Earthshot Prize awards £1 million to each of five annual winners — one for each of the five “Earthshots”:

EarthshotFocus Area

Clean Our AirAir quality and clean transportation
Revive Our OceansMarine health and sustainability
Build a Waste-Free WorldCircular economy and waste reduction

A Record-Breaking Year

The 2024 nomination period saw unprecedented interest in environmental solutions:

  • 2,429 nominations received — more than double any previous year
  • 139 countries represented
  • 430+ Official Nominators worldwide
  • Five times more nominations from Southeast Asia than ever before

As Chris Large, Director of Portfolio and Prize, noted:

“The response proves that the world doesn’t have an innovation problem — we have a scaling problem. The ideas are out there.”

Being nominated alongside thousands of innovative solutions from around the world is a tremendous honour.

Group cycling reduces emissions

Why Cycling Matters for Clean Air

Our nomination aligns with the “Clean Our Air” Earthshot, which specifically includes transitioning to clean transportation for all.

The connection is clear:

Every Ride Makes a Difference

  • A 10km bike commute instead of driving saves approximately 2.5kg of CO2 per trip
  • If 10% of car trips were replaced by cycling, we’d see significant air quality improvements
  • Cycling produces zero direct emissions — it’s the cleanest form of transport

Community Amplifies Impact

Party Onbici doesn’t just help individuals cycle — we build cycling communities. When one person starts cycling, they often inspire others. Group rides create a visible presence on our streets, normalising cycling as everyday transport.

The ripple effect means our impact on clean air extends far beyond our direct users.

From Local Rides to Global Recognition

When we started connecting cyclists in Sydney, we weren’t thinking about global environmental prizes. We were thinking about:

  • Making cycling safer through numbers
  • Helping people find riding companions
  • Building community around sustainable transport

But it turns out that building cycling communities is exactly the kind of grassroots, scalable solution that the Earthshot Prize was created to find.

What This Nomination Means

Being nominated for the Earthshot Prize:

  1. Validates our environmental impact — cycling isn’t just about fitness or fun, it’s a climate solution
  2. Raises awareness — connects our community to a global movement for environmental action
  3. Opens doors — brings attention to the role of active transport in cleaning our air
  4. Inspires action — shows that everyday choices, like choosing to ride, matter at the highest levels

The Bigger Picture

The Earthshot Prize has now considered over 5,600 solutions from around the world. To be among them is humbling.

Prince William founded the Prize with a belief that:

“The Earthshot Prize exists to champion the game-changers, the makers, the creatives, the leaders.”

We may not be developing new technology or inventing breakthrough materials. But we are doing something just as important: changing behaviour, building communities, and making sustainable transport choices easier and more enjoyable.

Every Pedal Counts

Whether or not we progress further in the Earthshot Prize, this nomination reminds us why we do what we do. Every group ride organised, every cyclist connected, every car trip replaced — it all adds up.

You don’t need to win a prize to make a difference. You just need to ride.
